John dedicated 31 years of his life to the Australian Army, serving as a Marine Specialist with deployments to Bougainville, East Timor, Afghanistan, and the Solomon Islands. Throughout his career, John took on various roles, including trade-related postings across Australia, operating Army Watercraft, and instructing in both trade and regimental settings. He eventually rose to the position of Warrant Officer Class One, serving as the Senior Trade Advisor for HQ 1 Division and HQ 17 CSS Brigade.

Unfortunately, John’s military career was cut short due to injuries, leading to his medical discharge from the Army in 2017. This transition was challenging, and it had a significant impact on John’s mental health. Struggling with a loss of identity and purpose, John’s well-being declined rapidly, resulting in multiple admissions to Ward 17. His life hit a low point, culminating in an attempted suicide. It was during this dark period that John realised he needed to find a way to rebuild his life and regain a sense of purpose.

Determined to turn things around, John decided to focus on what he loved most: working with his hands. He envisioned turning his passion into a business, but he soon realised that he lacked the knowledge and skills in marketing and branding needed to make it successful. That’s when John reached out to ‘I’ve Got Your 6 Foundation’ (IGY6) and shared his vision with their team. He had the drive but needed the right guidance to transform his idea into a thriving business.

Cristina, the CEO of IGY6, stepped in to provide John with the support he desperately needed. She helped him develop a positive mindset, while also guiding him through the essentials of branding, promotion, web design, and even creating a logo for his business. With IGY6’s assistance, John was able to launch his business, ‘I Can Fix That,’ and after three years, it’s thriving, with a growing list of satisfied clients. Alongside the success of his business, John’s mental health has greatly improved, and he’s found a new purpose in life after his Army career.

In recognition of his journey and the progress he made, IGY6 invited John to become their Chair and Ambassador. Grateful for the support he received, John eagerly accepted the role, knowing how important it is to share his story with others who may be struggling. He’s passionate about helping other veterans and people living with disabilities, drawing from his own experiences to show them that there is hope and a way forward.
